Relics (Faye Longchamp Mysteries, No. 2) Paperback – January 1, 2007
"A fascinating look at contemporary archaeology but also a twisted story of greed and its effects." Dallas Morning News
Faye Longchamp, back in school to pursue her dream of becoming an archaeologist, has been asked to run a project for which she is barely qualified, under the direction of a man who doesn't seem to like her much. Her assignment: to uncover the origins of a mysterious ethnic group. The Sujosa have lived in Alabama's most remote hills for centuries and have shown impressive immunity to many diseases...including AIDS.
Late one night, Faye awakes to find the house in flames. She saves herself and one of her housemates. But her friend Carmen, the project historian, never had a chance. Within days, an 18-year-old boy jumps from a cell phone tower that, when completed, would connect the outside world to the Sujosa community. Are these events somehow related?

About the author

I'm the author of the upcoming historical suspense novel THE PHYSICISTS' DAUGHTER and the award-winning Faye Longchamp archaeological mysteries. My thriller, WOUNDED EARTH, is available in print, ebook, and audiobook editions.
I'm a university professor of writing, and I'm also a chemical engineer by training and license, with a degree in engineering physics thrown in for spice. This background came in handy while writing THE PHYSICISTS' DAUGHTER, which features Justine Byrne, who works at a Rosie-the-Riveter-type job during World War II. I like to describe Justine like this: "The Nazis are no match for the physicists' daughter." As for the protagonist of my archaeological mysteries, I'd say, "Faye Longchamp digs up trouble." If you like strong, smart, independent female protagonists, I think you might like Justine and Faye.
My other fiction includes several short stories, available separately as ebooks, and as a collection in both ebook and print form, called JEWEL BOX: SHORT WORKS BY MARY ANNA EVANS. YOUR NOVEL, DAY BY DAY: A FICTION WRITER'S COMPANION is available for novelists in both ebook and print form.
I am a co-editor with Dr. JC Bernthal of an upcoming book on the bestselling novelist of all time, the BLOOMSBURY HANDBOOK TO AGATHA CHRISTIE. It is very much a labor of love to the Queen of Mystery.
I enjoy reading, writing, teaching, gardening, spending time with my family, cooking, and playing my 7-and-a-half-foot-long monster of a grand piano. For more information on my work, visit www.maryannaevans.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2024Everything that you could want from a mystery thriller, even romance. With an archeological setting and a scientific approach to solving crimes what more could you want.
Mary Anna Evans writing talents are so skilled she blessed the reader with no foul language, no sexual overtones and no graphic violence. The character development is superb.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2017Relics is the 2nd book in the Faye Longchamp series. Faye has a assignment or a job to travel to Alabama to do an archeology study on the Sujosa people who live in this remote area. They have been found to have immunity to Aids and some other diseases. No one knows where the Sujosa people came from They have a distinctive look with their turquoise colored eyes and a light streak in their hair on the back of their head.
Faye arrives from her Pan Handle island home in Florida to the remote area. . With her is her assistant Joe who is a native American with complete loyalty to her. He watches over her. There is also a team of academics who are assigned to this project. Soon after she arrives, the building where she is sleeping burns up. A co-worker dies in the fire. Faye barely makes it out with taking out an injured co-worker with her. The fire appears to be arson.
Soon another death occurs. It looks like secrets are being guarded. Mary Anna Evans (the author) can really write a tight well plotted mystery that is an original mystery. I did not know who the murderer was until the end. This is a very good series that I will continue with. If you like a well written plotted mystery with an archeology subplot, you should like this series.
I read that Mary Anna Evans has been compared to Tony Hillerman. I have never read a Tony Hillerman book so I don't know if I agree or not. While I was reading the book, Faye Longchamp reminded me somewhat of Anna Pigeon. They have different vocations but they are small strong independent women who take on whatever is needed. They go to different locations in their series also.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2024I really suspected someone else would get murdered but no, it was someone I liked. But the second murder baffled me since I couldn't find a connection. I was surprised with the laws that had been broken, but understood Faye's silence. Really good read.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2012I so enjoyed Artifacts that I immediately downloaded Relics. It did not disappoint. Once again, the plot was tight and on point. The characters were believable and enjoyable. The revelation to the mystery was a complete surprise to me.
The only downside to this book was the number of editing errors; spelling, punctuation, etc.
The story, however, was top notch.
I look forward to reading Effigies.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2016The first book of this series was much, much better. The story here was slow and the protagonist seems to have lost her edge. While she operated on the edge of legality and was willing to circumvent statutes in her first story, Faye Longchamp, developed as an interesting character. In this second book, she has become rather boring. The plot was pretty good, but the story moved slowly -- too slow, for me. Whereas, I might consider a third book before putting the hammer down, it will be awhile as there are many more stories that can be read before pursuing Faye again.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2017I absolutely love this series for the great main characters, settings, and mysterious plot twists! When Faye Longchamp, the heroine, goes to Alabama on a dig, she brings along her hunky Cherokee assistant, Joe, and it's not long before she's dealing with a murder of a team member and the mysterious Sujosa people. The Sujosa people have piercing aquamarine eyes and are resistant to disease but no one knows their true origins. This installment was one of my favorites due to the deep the setting in the Deep South of Alabama, and of the backstory of the Sujosa people, a native group of people who've rarely been exposed to the outside world. I found myself entertained, intrigued, and doing my own research into the that area of the US and the people that live there. I feel that about every book and have enjoyed visiting the different locations in the series. A truly unforgettable heroine and a great storyline. I highly recommend Relics, along with all the books in this fantastic series!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 4, 2017I have read the entire Faye Longchamp series and am now rereading in anticipation of the publication of the next one in the series, "Burials". (already available to preorder!) I love this series! I like how Evans weaves together historical facts, scientific knowledge and great characters into mysteries that I can't put down. In this particular book, she does a great job of capturing the feeling of a small rural southern town including its charm, personalities of the residents and very real financial and social pressures folks who live there face. If you haven't started the series, start with Artifacts, the first one and happy reading!
